If you asked someone the same question you might win. If you don't ask people to be friendly they usually assume you are not unless you have played with them. A lot of the players at the high tables are there because they know when to be friendly and when not to. Chatting helps to know what a player will do.

So if I have a big stack next to someone else's big stack we can agree to move away from each other instead of fighting and both losing the game. It's just a good strategy.
