ok so anyone that knows me...knows that i dont like Pat Whalen...he's as close to a PGE as you can be without actually suiciding on him..cuz thats not how fiero rolls. anyways... today i went to sit at a table and get the message "You are not allowed to sit with Pat Whalen, for the remainder of the month."
Ironically....its 230AM and there's only 1 high stakes tables playing at a time...so i cant play unless i can beat him to red... how stupid...how can i be banned from someone i dont even like? |

at 10:21 AM, Monday February 25, 2008 EST my theory on this...
the RC calculator only calcs if you do much better with someone else, not if they do much better with you too. so in your case, youre really good at pwning pat, so when you play while pat is present, since you pge him and beat him more than he beats you, then your average finish is higher than normal. ofc, pats average finsih with you will be lower than normal i bet. but the RC calc doesnt look at combined average finishing, it only looks at single-person average finish, and then penalizes both based on that. is that correct Ryan? |

at 12:35 PM, Monday February 25, 2008 EST Not quite monte. Fiero to Pat is the same as Pat to Fiero.
My theory on this is that when fiero PGE's pat both do poorly. This could be the majority of games together. These games aren't considered in the RC query. What the query picks up is that when either pat of fiero do well the other does well too. Even if this is only 5% of games. I think this valid too. What I see on the top tables is the newer players doing poorly. Maybe they're not as good, maybe they don't chat enough, and maybe they're easy targets. Regardless, top players will typically go after unknowns before PGE's. In this case they get picked up by the RC query. This is good since it breaks down a barrier for new players. I would like to see more high stakes tables but I think it will take some time for players to realize that moving from 500 to 2500 isn't that bad (the old barriers to entry are lower). |

at 12:58 PM, Monday February 25, 2008 EST WOW! Very nice Ryan!
Your function is actually trying to detect reality! Awesome! Hopefully, after some time, there will be more players at higher levels playing more high stakes tables minimizing the risk of newer players at high stakes tables being targeted. (If I read you correctly) I hope it works! |

at 12:59 PM, Monday February 25, 2008 EST I think ignoring games where one does poorly but the "partner" does well is a mistake and leeds to silly RC hits. Since the RC can be spiked with 3-4 good games but then discounts maybe as many as 10-20 games when game results would indicate a more independent playing style. Relying on small statistical outliers seems like a bad idea.
I am not saying I don't like the RC. I think it is a good idea and should help encourage newer players to play the higher tables. I just think that only looking for certain stats you are going to only find what you want to find, not the whole picture. |
