endgame, me, purple and yellow.

yellow had what i figured was a fairly insurmountable lead, so i flagged for 2nd place. yellow out of sheer...impatience? starts overextending, and attacks both purple and i even though i'd previously announced that i'd flagged in the chat (thus letting him/her know that i posed no further threat). so i started attacking him/her again (bad form to attack somebody who announced that they're flagged, imo), as did purple.

Yellow then flagged out for 3rd. and somehow purple ended up 1st even though i had far more land. in this situation shouldn't I have gotten 2nd, given that i was 1st among those left on the board?

you mean to say 'shouldn't i have gotten 1st', and the answer is no

Once you concede 2nd, that's as good as it gets. Like you found out, doesn't mean you have to stop attacking number one.

If purple flagged 2nd, then you'd have won but he played smart (maybe?) and didnt flag maybe hoping you guys would attack and get 1st
