One dom point when you finish first means you weren't in first most of the game. The entire point of it is that if you are solidly winning the entire game, but then lose, you see some sort of reward in the form of dom points.

In the same way, if you're losing, but somehow everyone else dies, goes away, gets bad luck etc and you win, your dom will still reflect the fact that you didn't have a solid lead all game
