Just wanted to share a little fun conversation and get some other takes on whether they agree with me or not. The dude got trapped with his 8 stacks in the back row cause I outplayed him, he decided to sit around all game with 1 stack while his buddy tried to make it so I would end up in 3rd. Fortunately I pulled off a miracle 7v8 to earn my 2nd, but those are sour grapes.
What I'm interested in is the general opinion of how much is luck and how much is skill. I'd put the numbers at around 40% skill 60% luck. panathlon: and where does it say the game restack based on how you play? panathlon: you are so full of crap panathlon: just dont play like a jerk bcmatteagles: dude it's called positioning your big stacks bcmatteagles: in the right places bcmatteagles: it's common sense panathlon: and admit luck when you get it bcmatteagles: and that will determine where the big stacks end up panathlon: i had more dice than you bcmatteagles: i don't care i had better position because of how i played panathlon: but they were all getting stacked in my back territories panathlon: for no reason bcmatteagles: you got out played plain and simple panathlon: there was no reason for it panathlon: you just got lucky bcmatteagles: it's because i took some risks to kill your up front big stacks bcmatteagles: there was no luck panathlon: i hate when people on this game claim skill bcmatteagles: go ask any of the other top players panathlon: its about 90 percent luck bcmatteagles: there's a reason it's the same group in the top 10 |

at 8:49 AM, Saturday September 22, 2007 EDT It's, like, 50/50. You're not going to win without having at least some idea of what you are doing (like not burying big stacks and shit). On the other hand though, you are not going to win without at least some lucky moments (good start, NOT losing that 4v2 to connect, lucky 7v8, etc...)

at 11:25 AM, Saturday September 22, 2007 EDT It's not how skillful you are, but how skillful you are relative to the other players at the table. And the majority of kdice players are competent enough such that luck plays the greatest part in deciding the winner (true for the old 2000 tables). As the number of players in the game reduces, small variations in skill level can become apparent. I think social connections play a much bigger roll than skill though. Being able to trust someone not to attack you given they have other reasonable options is a huge advantage. Of course you avoid them in return, else the system breaks down.
