During the Korean War (1950-53), American forces were sent to Korea to fight against North Korean/Chinese forces. The Koreans refered to the GI's as "Miguk", which is Korean for America or American. The GI's heard it as "me gook." And so, "gook" became a somewhat unkind slang for an Asian. This was reinforced during the Vietnam war, when GI's (who knew the slang from previously) had extensive contact with Asians, and the term became more widely used. So yeah, it's definitely not just a Vietnam term. It's used to describe Asian people (negatively) in general. |
