Start out with points so people have something to lose

been playing these 0-10 tables for a while now and all the time i see people suiciding - grabbing as many territories as the can early on, taking Major risks, only to be completly defeated by round three

the problem with this is that they do it at the expense of the other players, and some may say its all part of the game, but its sapped the fun right out of the game for me, and unless i can somehow rise above the scum floating around i dont see how i can enjoy the game they way it is being played now.

Why not start everyone of with X points, like the old system where people had 1500, so that these suiciders have something to lose, ie 50 points, and have 50 tables, 20 tables and 0 tables, then the game would become more about strategy, and these suiciders would be left to duke it out at the lower tables whilst other more effective players would be able to enjoy themselves more.

It wouldnt be hard to implement, simply add X points to peoples scores and add some more tables

Speaking as a suicider myself, I have a problem with this idea - suiciding only works because there's nothing left to lose. Give us points to start from, and we'll just play (mostly). Though, I think it's fair to say that someone will "do the math" and figure out where the cost/benefit lies in staying in a game with a terrible starting position versus waiting for the 3rd (4th?) round flag option. As far as I can tell, the concrete number of losable points is nearly the same (but I'm not good at math, which is why the new rules suck for me, inducing suicides until I get a good start).

It's already been addressed before. Ultimately people would abuse the system by spamming new accounts AFTER they suicide and lose.

And what stopped them from doing this on the ELO system?!?

I see the problem with the "I have nothing to lose"-er's a little differently. The problem is not being overly aggressive on the first or second turn. The problem is hanging on for too many turns before flagging, making other players who want to flag pay in more points.

Players who are too aggressive on the first or second turns are punished by not getting any wins, which was the case with the old kdice and even with Dicewars.

In the new game there may be an incentive to build earlier toward the center than in the old game, because it takes too much time to develop a strong corner base. Since there is only one center to build toward, conflicts may arise sooner than in the old game. The cause, though, is not the zero point start but the lower likelihood of getting a big score for second or third place.
