Numbers on top of dice?

What do the numbers mean on the top of the dice on the map? Are they just random? Do they imply something about your position, connected territories, threat to competitors, etc?

RED & GREEN = 1 PURPLE = 2 YELLOW = 3 BLUE = 4 BROWN = 5 TEAL = 6 It is the playing order, except red and green are forced to share because a six sided di does not not have seven numbers :p -CoMik- |

Also, when stacking, sometimes they all change to the same number. |
