are people really that dumb?

I love rolling something like an 8v4 and losing and then getting stomped and people saying that I suck. How can I suck because the dice rolled a crappy roll? Does no one recognize the luck involved? Say you get a crappy start, and theres not much you can do, all of the sudden its you that sucks, not the positioning.

Do people really not understand this game? If someone gets two five stacks and a 2 stack next to each other all touching and I get 5 three stacks on every end of the board, it doesn't make them better, just luckier. wtf?

The game is completely based around where you start. Some people start with three territories connected from the beginning and a five-stack on the side. Others (like me) start with four territories: 3 and 4 stacks on opposite sides f the map.

Unless people actually make bad moves or are terribly unlucky, the game can basically be determined at the start.

Starting isn't all that matters but boy does it help, I just won a table starting with on stack on each corner, of course I had some great dice rolls that helped on the luck end ;-)

Well, they are the dumb ones. But I am curious about the oddness of the rolls. weird ones seem to be very prominent.

compare 4vs3 success rate to expected.

No doubt that luck plays a big part in where you finish, but skill can improve how often you finish in a higher place. You need to play skillfully to score better than your starting position would suggest. If you have the worst starting position, but still manage to finish top 4, you must be doing something right. When I look at someone's performance over many many games, and see that they have at least 60% of their games in the top three and only a few percent of their games in 6th or 7th place, they have to be playing pretty skillfully to accomplish that. They are obviously outperforming what a game based on pure luck would suggest. They may also be really good at sucking up to number 1, but that usually shows in an unusually large number of 2nd and 3rd place finishes compared to 1st place finishes. Don't be bothered by a bad starting position, make it a challenge to finish better than expected. It is much more satisfying to come back from an awful start to win or finish with a high placement, than it is to win one where your starting position was unbelievably good.

By the way tennischick, I forgot to answer the original question. Yes, people really are that dumb. And they like to taunt people with bad luck. Don't let it bother you. Follow them to the next table they play at, and make them a target. People who like to taunt you for bad luck often have short tempers and are fun to mess with.
