The end of honorable play, from an old timer

The interesting thing about kdice in the early days was, that while there were, and are, no rules about how you play the game, ie. flags, alliances, etc. there became a general agreement among the regular players about what was acceptable (virtually everything, all's fair in war) and what is not (pre-allys, breaking truces). When the odd kiddie came along and broke those rules they were mercilessly chased off the main tables by the other players and a very basic "law of war" was maintained. Now, some players, I'm looking at you William Wallace, took that standard of play to the extreme, but also added an entertaining element to the game.
These days we have players with elos above 2000 who are getting away with rampant pre-gaming (eg. Davy Jones and Leonidas) and just generally poor play and yet there seems to be no concern from the regulars. Now part of this may be the new, most regular table splits (2k/1.8K) where many of these players will drop down to the 1800 tables to pull their crap (and help their partner get back above 2k) and then go to ground while they're on the top tables. But also, with the ranking system the top players have something new to focus on and seem to spend less time worrying about the health of the game itself. Of course, playing one ID on the top tables, and not having to create new ones to keep the game interesting also limits the better players exposure to the hive of scum and villany that the lower tables have become. This is unfortunate, particularly given Ryan spending all of his time focusing on the book and very little around here. With only about 2800 players last month (I let HB sit all month, when i played him on the 29th his rank after one game (at .0001) was 2200 - given that anyone who played a couple of games was going to get that many points, it seems a reasonable estimate) we still have a fairly fragile critical mass - enough bad players can still ruin the game as a going concern and as someting that it will be economically viable for Ryan to maintain and improve. A call to Monte, Luck, Mik, WW, Int, etc, to start to pay attention to the problem players and make this an unprofitable place for them to practice their trade. I'm sure there are some new netcode cheats for the lastest everquest or wow or whatever online game the kids are playing these days that will better occupy their time. |

HBergeron: how about you come and suck my dick Perhaps you should worry more about controlling your behavior on the internet, because we all know its serious business. |

at 12:28 AM, Monday June 4, 2007 EDT yeah, that sounds a lot like me - I'll let the folks who have been playing with me for months decide, and of course you're play speaks for itself.
Oh, and "we had no intentions of PRETRUCING UNTIL" (emphasis added) i'd say i'd seen it all, but then things like this come along... |

at 7:05 AM, Monday June 4, 2007 EDT I figure these posts speak for themselves - these are the sorts of dregs that used to live down on the 1500 tables but are slowly taking over kdice. I'm guessing their friends playing together, or brothers for that matter, with the coordinate posting, but not having enough time to play more than once or twice a day anymore I'll leave it up to the regulars to deal with them and their ilk appropriately

Although I agree with HB's concept of honorable play, and generally follow the unwritten rules, I find that this game is no fun at all when I let myself get pissed off about how other people decide to play. There are constructive ways to punish people who play badly. They don't always work. That's what the other tables are for. |

Also I completely agree with Firebus when he says "although I agree with HB's concept of honorable play, and generally follow the unwritten rules, I find that this game is no fun at all when I let myself get pissed off about how other people decide to play." I think that sums it up perfectly. We play this game for fun and although sometimes after a particularly bad run of luck it seems like a form self harm, most of us are here to enjoy ourselves. Getting pissed off because someone is trangressing unwritten rules is a recipe for disaster. Deal with it and move on. Yes, PGA's are annoying, kids throwing hissy fits because they're losing, being double or treble teamed because you're winning, having some bigoted fuckwit hurling abuse at you. All annoying. If you let it get to you, you will stop enjoyng the game altogether. It happens, there are many, many idiots in this world and most of them have web access. Now I have met many people in the month or so I have been playing K-dice, many of them on the "hive of scum and villany that the lower tables have become" and guess what? Most of the people are pleasant, well mannered individuals who enjoy playing a FREE game that someone has taken the time out to create. |
