OK, I'm hoping this one stays up, cuz every thread I make goes down the line faster than(insert comparison here).
I've been playing for several months now, and I still feel I play using the basic techniques. I understand others that are valuable, but, after looking at grun's alt. acct. and his win record, I've got a feeling I'm doing something wrong, or forgetting. It's difficult to really point out strategies, but, I'm just curious if I just suck, or is it luck, or am i missing out on something that I forgot? P.S.My "Tell me about yourself" thing on my profile says it all, so, I do want this!" |

at 1:09 PM, Saturday May 19, 2007 EDT Look to connect on the board in the early turns by connecting on sites you can connect to with high probability rolls ( i.e. 3v2, not 3v3). Look at the other colors, and don't waste dice connecting where someone who goes after you after will go right thru.
Try to find edges if possible, and realize that others are trying to do the same. Take some time after a few turns and Fortify if no one can attack you. A good defense is as good as a strong Offense. Be patient, the game is not won on the first turn. Be courteous, and don't give someone a reason for killing you by insulting their sex and or race/religion. I've played with you Dizzle and you seem to do fine. |

at 2:11 PM, Saturday May 19, 2007 EDT I guess what I'm really asking, is, what are good plan B's? I've had probably the worst games recently, being stuffed in the middle of everyone. I think now my question is:How do you deal with bad luck/ Ignorant people?

at 2:18 PM, Saturday May 19, 2007 EDT I came up with a catchy phrase that might be handy in the connect stage: "4 on 4 needs 4". That is, if you can connect by winning a 4 v 4, the number of countries you add to your base needs to be at least 4, counting the one you win. Otherwise, the net expected payoff in dice is not big enough to justify taking a chance on a 4 v 4. If you expect to be able to hold the connection if you make it, a 4 v 4 may be worth it even for a gain of 3 or 2 countries. A 3 v 3 or 2 v 2 is always worth it for a connect.

at 4:07 PM, Sunday May 20, 2007 EDT Some advice from me:
1. The key to "very" good play is reading your opponents. Especially in the first connecting-phase and in the phase just before 8v8 starts you gotta predict what everyone's going to do. - In the connecting phase you shouldnt waste dice by putting them in s.o.'s way as has been said. Exception: You can put enough dice there to prevent connecting. - actually from round 2/3 on you gotta know who'll settle where and gonna be fighting with whom. Stay out of fights if possible, of course, settle where there's least resistance. NEVER IN THE MIDDLE - might be tempting but even a 2-terr at the edge can outlive you. 2. This game is about number of dice, not number of territories. You should always have a "density" (dice per terr) higher than the average. If that means sitting on 1 terr for 3 rounds, then be it. Forget about dom-points. collect them later. 3. look what good truce would be and offer them just when you look strongest (after killing a high stack near you, that always impresses). Dont wait too long, the 1st usually truces with the first good offer. If you are first, take the weakest that will just secure your win. Hurry before everyone's against you. 4. Attack when you can. I recently watch more and more ppl not attacking although they could (have enough spare in 8v8). I'm convinced it's the wrong decision, except you can NOT prevent a split possibility and wanna have 2 tries next round when you might have to reconnect. But still, I would go for the attack, it payed of for me. 5. Most important: be nice to ppl. You will play them again. 6. Wear sunscreen. |
