Variants, if so, Ratings?

This may have been discussed previously, but I haven't figured out how to search the forum.

There is a posting in Ideas about a change to the game play and I started to craft a reply, then decided it might become a discussion and so I'm responding here.

OP: "We should be able to choose how many die we want to move to the next territroy after we capture it."

My response:
This would fundamentally change the game.

While I agree that all sorts of variants would be fun, you would have to maintain a separate rating system for each. Or you could leave variants out of the rating system, but that would reduce their popularity.

Or, maybe two ratings: one Pure and one Variant. Thus, if people are interested in adding a few play options, it doesn't bloat the rating system.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with a few variants I'd like see. Like maybe being able to move one die from one stack to another, once, at the start of your first turn...
